In a few weeks, my city is holding a birthday celebration which includes a picnic at a local park. Our local kids rec league has applied for a space to put a table up to give out registration info. We want to locate our table next to the basketball court at the park. We have a huge number of mini-basketballs with our logo on them. What we will do is have kids shoot a regular basketball at a hoop on the court. If they make it, we'll give them one of the mini-balls. If they miss, we'll probably let them keep shooting until they make a basket and then give them a ball.

We also intend to ask for donations for our "scholarship" fund. This is a fund we use to cover the registration fee for kids from low-income families. Even though we're a non-profit run by all volunteers, we just can't waive the fee for them because we have to cover our costs which are assessed per kid (gym rental, insurance, jerseys, etc.). A local restaurant just told us they're going to donate a percentage of their gross sales from one night a month during our season for this fund. It should be enough for about 10 scholarships. We usually wind up giving out about 50 per year and the fund is funded mostly by registration late fees. There's a cutoff for registration and if someone registers after the cutoff, they must pay a late fee.

I should know in a day or so if we are assigned a space.

OT-Different approaches between sports officials?

I was having this discussion earlier tonight with a friend of mine who umpires baseball, and thought it might be interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on this. The discussion went like this...

I brought up the observation that when it comes to "disagreements" between coaches/players and officials, it seems (to me at least) that baseball umpires appear to be more confrontational than officials in other sports. Basketball officials try to defuse situations when they arise, whereas baseball officials seem more apt to become belligerent and argumentative. As officials, are we not supposed to be held to a higher standard and be the voice of reason? However, I don't mean to speak disparagingly of baseball umpires, they still do a heck of a job.

My friend swears that baseball umpires are not instructed to argue or anything of the sort, but I still can't help but notice the difference. I could be way off base here with this observation, but I'm still curious. What do you guys think?

I saw this play happen in a pick up game but it makes me wonder how to call it in a game when I'm wearing the stripes.

The ball is rolling toward the out of bounds area player A1 is running the ball down to safe it has player B1 steps in front of player A1 who is a few feet from the ball. Preventing the player from making a playable attempt on saving the ball from going out of bounce. Is this a blocking foul when player B1 tries to impede player A1 who is attempting to safe the ball?

This fall, IFC (Independent Film Channel - a cable network) will run a mini-series on how weird it is here in Portland. It will be called "Portlandia". Produced by SNL producer Lorne Michaels, it will star Kyle MacLachlan as the Portland mayor. The real mayor, Sam Adams (who is openly gay, not that there's anything wrong with that), will appear in the first episode as the assistant mayor.

Also in the series' premiere, viewers will meet the owners of a lesbian book store; a militant bike messenger; an artsy couple who put cut-outs of birds on everything; and a punk rock couple negotiating a "safe word" to help govern their love life. The series is shot entirely on location in Portland.

If they really want to show something weird, they should come and film some of my games. :D

BTW - the most popular bumper sticker around here is "Keep Portland Weird" - followed by "Don't Californicate Oregon".

I have the chance to work some JC women’s BB this Fall. It will be my first experience with a shot clock. I am reading/reviewing the NCAA Rules book, but the only reference I have found to date for the shot clock is 9-11 Art 1.

Am I correct in that the shot clock will reset to 30 secs on ALL defensive violations and fouls?
Does it ever re-set to a time other than 30 sec?

Thanks.

I have been moving around a lot the last few years and every time I enter a new association I have a new set of rules to follow in order to gain varisty status. It doesn't bother me but it got me to thinking.

My question(s) for you:
What was the process for you when you joined your association?
Was there classroom time, if so how many years?
Were you assigned a mentor?
What did you have to score on the NFHS test?
Was there an evaluation process, if so what had to take place?
Any other requirements?

I realize there are a lot of questions, but your answers would be appreciated.

Thanks
Andy
