If it's a play where my focus on the players prevents me from seeing what the ball does, I will wave off also.

The 'C' on this play is a good friend of mine. I'm going to send him the clip and see what the crew said about the play.

IMO, if the Lead better positions himself on the end line, he would have had a great view of the play and would have got it right.

BNR - and I should always put this disclaimer somewhere - please emphasize to the C this was posted entirely for learning purposes, as are all of the clips.

That said, knowing what the crew had to say about this would be a valuable tool for all of us.

You probably enunciate better than the rest of us.

one step inside lane line...

The L is responsible for all parts of the SDF theory as they are all in his primary. While I am on the men's side, a constant theme I heard this year in my part of the country was correct call by correct person. Now if contact occurs and players are half way to the ground, then I will get involved, but I have no issues with the C on this play. If the contact is six inches on the other side of the lane line do you still want C to have a whistle.

Another dynamic for this play (and JMF will agree ). If you are the C or T and the crew is Dee Kantner and Eric Brewton are you coming and getting that play....HMMMMM

As far as the wave off, I bet that official that made that call is still doing hs, just a hunch. No need in NCAAW to wave off this play. Everyone in their game know you can't have a basket on this.......Captain Obvious can now leave the building.....
Did your D1 tourny buddy also mention that this was a secondary defender???

Kind of makes it tough to ref the SDF on a play when it is a secondary defender stepping in there. I still think that once the L picked up the pass out to the corner, C's competitive matchup became the post players as there was no one else for him to watch. It was the defensive post who stepped in trying to draw the charge, and C should have had her the entire time.

Going through my handy, dandy NCAAW CCA manual I see the following:

*(p. 56/Lead Court Coverage) L should pick up any secondary defenders that set up near the restricted arc for a potential crash situation on the drive to the basket.

*(p. 109/Double Whistles) The outside officials (C and T) should be patient with signals on plays to the basket...Plays to the basket on strong side are L's to give up.

Now...I know the T & C shouldn't have the first whistle on this. I also know there wasn't a double whistle. However it's the "(p)lays to the basket on strong side are L's to give up" statement that has me thinking T or C could have had a whistle, mainly because of the slight delay in the L's whistle. As I mentioned before it seemed as though he delayed hoping for some help.

C felt he was third in line for this call. Said he would have came late.

The c has the best look at this play. Various mechanics might say the call belongs to one official or the other but that will not change the fact of who had the best view and the probability of getting the call right as a crew.
