16 Min Halves HS

This year our state allowed for any game that was non-conference, and both teams agreed that they could try 2 16 min halves. Our school did this in a holiday tournment and I seemed to like it. The game flow was much faster.
Just curious if any of you have had this. Thoughts...comments....???'s...
Thanks,

I worked almost 50 varsity games this year in WI and we worked ZERO games in 2 halves. The option was there for non-conference games only and nobody wanted to do it.

They need to give the coaches something -- either an additional timeout or some extra playing time -- OR mandate it.

We held a tournament where we used halves also...the games were very good but the coaches would like an extra timeout.

Minnesota uses 2 16-minute halves.

This was my first year of basketball, so I don't really have any basis for comparison, but I like it.

Varsity games in Minnesota are 18-minutes halves. I don't think that I would like games played in quarters any more. In my opinion the flow of the game is much better when using halves.

You guys who are supporting halves as opposed to quarters do realize you're advocating taking away two rest periods, don't you?

18 minute halves in MN. I love it, if I had the choice I would go with halves every time.

Being an official in MN, we wondered what the ramifications would be from changing from four 8 minute quarters, to two 18 minute halves. After a couple years our officials have generally drawn these conclusions in no special order. Some other officials may disagree, or add more.

1. Entire game time is not any longer, meaning if the game started at 7:30pm, we are still finished at about 9pm just like with four 8 minute quarters.

2. Flow of the game is much better as would be expected, and coaches I've talked to have not wished they had additional time outs which they gave up by not having quarter breaks. If the game is close at the end time outs are used, but on most occasions the game finishes with unused timeouts.

3. The pay for officials did not go up for the additional added game time. Ha!

4. We were disappointed to see the junior varsity game time extended to 16 minute halves instead of staying at 14 minutes per half.

5. Players today now have an additional 4 minutes per game to break any state or school records that their predecessors did not have.

6 If teams would win be 20 in years past, now they are winning by 30-40 points, which is disappointing by-product but expected, however our state has also instituted a running clock with the 35 point differential with 9 minutes remaining so that helps.

Maybe the vending machines take 2 dollar bills and half-dollars to make up for it.

Our state does 16 min. halves for both girls&boys, and both varsity&JV.
Only my 2nd yr...I've never worked a game with quarters. Can't compare...but our games do seem to move along quickly.

Just declare a media timeout and then use that time to interview some howler monkeys.
