Any suggestions on how to clean a FOX 40? A few times I tried to "sterilize" my whistle it melted. Other forms of cleaners were difficult to rinse and the 90 proof whiskey I tried left too strong of a booze odor.

I tried boiling water once - it cracked all my whistles :)

I think the best thing is rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. Rinse it under hot water to get the alcohol off.

Or don't rinse the alcohol off and you'll call more double flagrant intentional multiple false personal fouls

soak them in mouthwash over night, all the gunk will fall out, and it leaves them tasting minty.

I just buy a new one. But aren't all us refs independently wealthy anyway?

Those fox40s are expensive! Maybe I'm just cheap. :D

I found a product called AquaBlast. It is used for cleaning toothbrushes and dental appliances. It works great. http://aquablast.aquafresh.com

What's wrong with that? :p I mean, if you don't like whiskey, use gin, or vodka, or tequila, or . . . .

I use mouthwash for my whistles.

Put your whistles in a glass of regular coca cola for 15 minutes. Not the wimpy, wimmens' diet stuff that the tofu-eaters drink(coughchuckcough). The MAN's stuff. Classic Coke, I mean! That'll remove all the gunk and it'll end up as clean as a whistle. Do NOT leave your whistle in the glass of coke for over 15 minutes. Your whistle will disappear if you do so. As an added bonus, you can strain the coke after you remove the cleaned whistle, and recover the gunk for re-cycling. Tastes sumthin' like beef jerky. Or maybe beef, jerky.

Didn't we go through this once before?

I own 2 whistles (in case I lose 1). I wash the whistle off at the end of the game with hot water. GUNK? Good lord, what are we blowing into the whistle??? I know some of the basketball I've seen has made me nauseous, but.....

They are expensive, but then again, how many people actually pay for them. The CYO league i work for gives them to all officials, and i get 1 at every camp i go to. I think that if you look hard enough, you'll be able to get them for free.

I have seen impatience on the part of some of the "regulars" when a question or issue is brought up that has been discussed before.

I understand your feelings, but this often makes me relucant to bring up questions. This makes me less likely to feel part of this forum. Is that what you guys want? To serve a narrow core of people who have been here for eons and have read every thread?

There are only only so many subjects that relate to basketball officiating so it seems to me that some basics are going to keep coming up.

I don't say this to offend- but to possibily make this forum more accessible for "non-regulars".
